Science
The Queen City Academy Charter School’s Science Department provides hands-on lessons based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Across the curriculum, lessons focus on engaging Scholars in their own learning by combining classroom instruction with independent studies and assessments.
Scholars participate in science activities to develop critical problem-solving strategies and skills that prepare them for obstacles in the real world.
Science Methods & Programming
NGSS organizes science concepts into Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI). These fundamental ideas are the foundation of the curriculum and prepare Scholars to thrive in science subject matter throughout their entire school career. The teaching of “cause and effect” is used to help Scholars find connections between science disciplines.
Scholars from grades K-4 learn the following science topics:
- Earth’s Place in the Universe
- Earth’s Systems and Human Activity
- Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
- Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions
- Plant and Animal Needs
- Waves and Light
- Weather and Climate
Scholars from grades 5-8 expand upon their literacy with the following science topics:
- Cells
- Chemical Reactions
- Earth’s Systems
- Ecosystems
- Forces
- Growth and Development of Organisms
- Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits
- Matter and Its Interactions/Properties
